Southampton came back from one goal down to beat Chelsea 2-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The match started off with an early save in the 3rd minute by Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Mendy, from a shot by Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Chelsea got their first shot on goal in the 14th minute from a left footed shot by Raheem Sterling which was easily saved by the Saints’ goalie while Sterling scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute.

A low cross from Mason Mount fell off Southampton’s Perraud who tried to block the ball but Sterling was right in position to curl the ball in from close range. It only took the home team five minutes to equalize.

A corner kick from James Ward-Prowse was poorly cleared away by Azpilicueta only to land in the foot of Southampton’s Romeo Lavia who fired from outside the box straight into the net to level the scoreline.

The Saints completed the comeback right before halftime with a goal from Adam Armstrong.

The second half resumed with a halftime substitution made by the Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel. Ruben Loftus-Cheek had a minor injury crisis and made way for Mateo Kovacic to sub on. But it was Southampton who were the first to make an attempt on goal in the early minutes of the second half.

A header on target from Elyounoussi deflected off Chelsea’s Cucurella and even a rebounded acrobatic from Elyounoussi was not enough to add a 3rd goal. Chelsea made three substitution in the 67th minute bringing on Ben Chilwell, Armando Broja and Christian Pulisic for Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kai Havertz respectively.

But the blues could still not produce any good chances. A header from Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu was prevented from going in by Thiago Silva who made a goal line clearance in the 73rd minute.
