The story of Sound Smith 90.9 FM Gboko, as told to me by the proprietor of the radio station, Dr Eugene Ivase, is that of a long shot that has come in.

He incorporated the legal entity that warehouses the station in 1995 when he also applied for a licence.

Dr Ivase acquired the land upon which Sound Smith now stands at Abeva, Gboko, in 1997 and started constructing the site piecemeal in the same manner he acquired some of the broadcast equipment.

Studio equipments: Audio console, mic, desktop etc..

Things were done in this manner because appeals for financial support failed to yield results.

Yet resilience paid off in 2021 when President Muhammadu Buhari approved the licence.

Other requirements of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission stipulated for the commencement of test transmission have also been met and the station is now on air.

Dr Eugene Ivase is a consummate media man who has acquired cognate experience at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority.

He also had a remarkable service record in the public relations department of the Benue Cement Company when it was at the zenith of its glory. Dr Ivase thereafter proceeded to the service of the federal government from which he retired in 2018 as Director, Advocacy and Communications at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in which position he had won the prestigious excellence award of the agency.

He had also served in Benue State as Principal Secretary, Government House Administration, in the twilight of the Gabriel Suswam administration.

Sound Smith FM proprietor is a thorough-bred media professional who has carved a niche for himself as someone determined and committed to excellent service delivery in whatever he does.

When we met we had fruitful discussion on boosting the indigenous content of the station which he said would be at least 60 per cent.
