South-West PDP oppose calls for Ayu’s resignation
The People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the South-west region of Nigeria have opposed calls for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Senator, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.
The South-West PDP which comprises of Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti and Lagos chapters made this known in a statement signed by Hakeem Amode, Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the party and three others from Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun chapters.
This follows a call by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde who called for Ayu’s resignation at the South-West PDP stakeholders’ meeting with the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.
Makinde had stated that Ayu’s resignation would not only give the South-West PDP a sense of belonging within the party but also show that the party would be able to restructure the country.
“We must resolve the issue on the face of Nigerians, by asking the National Chairman to step down, so that the PDP in the Southern part of the party will feel included in the top hierarchy of the party,” he said.
Conversely, the leadership of the party in the South-Western states via a statement signed by Hakeem and three others, pledged their unwavering support and commitment to the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The statement read,
“We wish to affirm our faithfulness to the PDP constitution which clearly stipulates procedure for leadership election and removal.
“As the only political party that has not changed name or logo since its establishment in 1998, the party cannot afford to appear unserious.
“We appeal to the leadership of our party in the South-West region to work together to respect the constitution of our party, because if we cannot respect our own rules, guidelines and constitution as a party, how will Nigerians trust us to respect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria when voted into the office?”
