Condolences pour in as Guardian newspaper’s Benue correspondent, Akaazua passes away

The Guardian newspaper’s Benue correspondent, Mr. Joseph Akaazua Wantu, has passed away on Tuesday, 13 September, 2022, the newspaper announced.

The deceased was also a one time Vice Chairman of the Correspondent Chapel of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State.

The 62-year-old Guardian newspaper’s Benue correspondent died  at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi, the state capital leaving behind a wife, Mrs. Yemena Josephine Wantu, and five children.

The late Mr. Akaazua wantu graduated from Benue State University, Makurdi with a degree in Mass Communication.

Since his death, condolence messages have been pouring in from different people who knew the late journalist.

The Benue State Government, via the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Michael Inalegwu, has said the state would miss his services.

The Government described the late veteran reporter as someone who was “a dedicated journalist with a credible track record and objective reportage.”

Similarly, Chairman of the state Correspondent Chapel, Mr. Vande Tor’Acka, has commiserated with The Guardian over the sad development.

While considering his demise as the will of God, Acka said his death came as a shock to all his colleagues

“It was so sudden. Just two weeks back, his health started deteriorating. On Saturday, we brought him to the hospital and he was really getting stable. Then, all of a sudden, we woke up today to his death”, he said.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the NUJ Zone D, who is also caretaker chairman in charge of NUJ Benue Council, Comrade Chris Atsaka, has also commiserated with the deceased family and the Benue state chapter of the Correspondents’ Chapel over the demise of Akaazua.

The Zone D vice president paid the condolence visit in company of Chairman Radio Benue chapel, Mr Paul Mandeun, Benue state chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr John Shiaondo,  as well as the publisher of The Prime newspaper, Mr Samuel Ogbaji.

Atsaka described the death of the Mr Akaazua Wantu as ‘unfortunate’, and “devastating“.

After eulogizing the deceased, the caretaker chairman in charge of NUJ Benue Council also prayed God to give the chapel and the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
