Court sentences man to prison for stealing five tubers of Yam

A Kano State Sharia court has sentenced a 20-year-old man identified as, Sani Usaini, to six months in prison with an option of fine of ₦6,000 for stealing five tubers of yam that worth ₦10,000.

The convict, who is a resident of Dan-Rimi Street, Rijiyar Lemo Quarters, Kano, committed the crime on September 6, 2022.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Abdullahi Wada, had told the court that the matter was reported to the Fagge Police Station, Kano, on September 6, 2022, by, Mr Umar Nuhu, of Brigade Quarters.

The prosecutor further told the court that the complainant told them that the defendant, at about 05:30p.m, trespassed into his business place where he sells yam along Galadima Market in Fagge Local Government Area of the state and stole the five tubers of yam.

The convict was arrested while trying to sell the stolen yams.

The prosecutor also told the court that the offense committed by the defendant contravened the provisions of Section 133 of the Kano State Sharia Law.

After charges were read, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Presiding Judge, Ismai’l Muhammad-Ahmed, therefore sentenced him to six months in prison with an option of fine of ₦6,000.
