The Management of Adamawa State School of Nursing and Midwifery has explained why it suspended the admission process that started on Thursday.

According to the management, the suspension of the admission process was in response to a protest staged by some Muslims in the state.

The school had on August 16, 2022, released a circular signed by the school’s registrar, Mallam Ibrahim Abubakar, which invited suitably qualified candidates for admission into Basic Nursing, Basic Midwifery, Community Nursing and Community Midwifery programmes.

The circular directed interested candidates to Make a payment of five Thousand seven hundred and fifteen Naira (₦5,715) only, via remita with their ATM Card or generate RRR and go to any BANK for the payment.

In the same circular, candidates were also required to pay ₦500 into the account of Adamawa State Nursing & Midwifery Council Committee at Brethren Microfinance Bank Yola –a bank owned by Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria, (EYN) church.

However, this did not go down well with some Muslims in Adamawa State who staged a protest, describing the use of the bank for the payment of the ₦500 fee as “a gradual Christianisation of the state structures.”

The Muslim group led by, Shehu Ismail, said if the money is paid via the bank, it would increase the earnings of the church and enable them to carry out their activities.

“As the church’s establishment, through the bank, EYN will give the church some financial strength and grant the youth scholarships, capital, and the likes, the group said.

Responding to questions asked by the press, the Provost of the school, Lami Aminu, said:

The issue is simple. There’s no crisis, except for those that didn’t really understand. On this (admission) committee, we have a board comprising people from both religions. They agreed that they would use that bank. That was exactly what happened

When students started paying, it was a professional fee. Is there any problem there? People interpret things the way they want. That is just what is happening. We have debunked it. I have suspended the admission

The professional fee is used to maintain the Nursing and Midwifery Committee at the state level. It’s not for the bank. How will it be for the bank”, ICIR quoted Amina.

As of the time of filing this report, admission at the Adamawa State School of Nursing and Midwifery process was still on hold.
