A lot of Nigerians have opted for a generator for their homes and businesses.
Due to the interrupted/unstable supply of electricity

There are different brands found in markets, stores, or roadside dealers. Some are original products while others are substandard or fake products, But can we identify the original ones?

Basic things to check while buying a Generator

The Coil
When buying a generator, check the coil carefully before purchasing. The coil must be appropriately wound inside the motor. Otherwise, the coil is damaged. When buying a generator, it will be best to buy one with a 100% copper coil. It lasts longer than any other coil you may think of. All generators have coils which could be copper, aluminum, or brass.

Copper Wire Coil:

Top-quality generators have coils made with copper. One needs to check the coil very carefully before buying. You will notice that the copper wire colour is reddish-brown. Although some sellers might spray the aluminum or brass wire to look like copper, you will know if it is sprayed because it will stain your hands once you touch it. Also to test If it’s copper, simply place a magnet on the surface of the coil, if the magnet attracts, then, it is not copper as Copper isn’t magnetic. When a coil is sprayed it may be an indication that the engine has been refurbished and the engine could knock within three months of usage.

Aluminium Wire Coil:

Aluminium coil is not so good and it’s mostly found in cheap generators. The aluminum wire comes in shiny silver colour. This is not as durable as the copper coil.

Brass Wire Coil:

The brass wire coil is gold coloured. it is the weakest out of the generator coil. it will be best to avoid any generator that comes with this type of coil.
A lot of generator vendors often trick customers into buying brass wire coil, stating it’s a gold wire coil.

Engraved Name on the Generator
An original generator should have its name Engraved on its parts, this might not be the case for all generators but ensure you buy one that has its name crested not painted on at least four parts. Look at the fuel tank, carburetor, cylinder head cover, engine block, air filter, and alternator rear frame for the engraved name of the generator.

Engine Block

When buying a generator check the engine block. You can identify a fake engine block from an original one at first glance. A fake engine block is very shiny when looked at and it has lightweight. You can also test the engine block by tapping the engine, it should make a muffled sound if it is original. If it makes a loud resonating and unstable noise, it shows that it’s fake or substandard.

The Sound of the Generator
Before you buy a generator ask the seller to test it for you. The way a generator is packaged does not guarantee if it is original or not. When tested observe the sound.

A good generator has a regular or smooth and continuous sound. If the generator sound is rough don’t buy it.

As stated above, under the difference between the types of coil, Aluminum generators are twice as loud as copper generators.

May we not fall victims to substandard generator purchases, but may we always go for the best.

A lot of people out there spend a huge amount of money buying Generators which they end up using for only a short period, while others spend money taking them for repairs and servicing them from time to time.
