Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed an interest in buying Manchester United.

Jim Ratcliffe was initially enthusiastic about buying an ownership stake in United, to eventually take full custody at Old Trafford but his interest in taking the long-time owner of the club is not about the money that has been spent or not spent.

Jim Ratcliffe is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how valuable the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.

A spokesman for the Ineos billionaire confirmed that Ratcliffe would welcome the chance to talk to the club’s American owners. “If the club is for sale, Jim Ratcliffe is definitely a potential buyer,” the spokesman said.

Jim Ratcliffe is the founder and chairman of Ineos, the fourth-largest chemical company in the world. In April 2020, Bloomberg Billionaires Index listed Ratcliffe as the second richest person in the UK and the 55th richest person in the world.

Ratcliffe is one of few people who could finance a takeover.
Manchester United began the season with successive losses, at home to Brighton and away to Brentford, scoring once and conceding six goals.

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, had aroused United fans earlier on Wednesday when he tweeted to say he was buying the club, only to clarify hours later that he was kidding.

Manchester United fans hope Ratcliffe will bring a change to Old Trafford.
