The suspended Rivers State University lecturer and former Head of Department of Microbiology, Prof. David N. Ogbonna, is to appear in the court on August 29, 2022.
Prof. Ogbonna was arrested and arraigned on June 28, 2022, before the Rivers State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Port Harcourt.
The microbiologist allegedly raped his 20-year-old student on 16th May, 2022.
The student who was not happy with the act reported him to the school authority, where an investigation was conducted and Ogbonna suspended by the Governing Council.
Radiojagaban gathered that when the lecturer appeared in court, in July, the charge against him read:
“You Professor David Ogbonna on 16th day of May, 2022 at Rivers State University campus, Orunworukwo in Obio/Akpor Magisterial district but triable in Port Harcourt Magisterial district, did unlawfully and indecently assaulted a female aged 20 years by inserting your p**is into her v**ina, thereby committed an offence punishable under section 360 of the criminal code CAP 37 Vol.11 of laws of Rivers State, Nigeria 1999.”
After the charge was read, the suspended lecturer pleaded not guilty and was given a bail in the sum of 2 million Naira with stringent conditions.
On July 28, the Rivers State Government took over the prosecution of the case.
When the case came up in court for the second time, the prosecuting counsel and a representative of the state’s Ministry of Justice, G.U. Amana told the court that the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice on the case was not yet out.
He, therefore, prayed the court for more time to enable the DPP advice to be out, a prayer the defense team did not oppose.
The chief Magistrate, Menenen F. Poromon, adjourned the case to August 29, 2022 for continuation of trial.
