A court in Mangalmé, north-eastern Chad has ruled that anybody who declines a marriage proposal must be punished.
The Higher Islamic Council in the North-eastern Chad said the decision is in line with the Quran.
The court ruled that any female who rejects a marriage proposal must pay a fine known as amchilini, ranging from $23 (over ₦9,000) to $39 (over 16,000) while males would pay $15 ( over ₦9,000).
The ruling has attracted reactions from many chadians.
A hashtag, #StopAmachlini, has been already launched by the Chadian Women’s Rights League.
The group has described the ruling illegal and a violation of the national law that guarantees freedom of consent to marriage in Chad.
In 2015, the country passed a law that prohibits child marriages.
Prior to the law, the Chad’s Institute of Statistics said that 60% of women aged between 20 and 24 were married when they were still children.
Apart from early child marriage, forced marriages is also prevalent in the country.
