Four days ago, the president of Napoli FC, Aurelio De Laurentis made a statement about African players which the African continent found insulting and quite derogatory.
The Napoli FC president said ” Enough of African players or they should give up playing in the African Cup of Nations. I won’t be buying them anymore for this reason,” De Laurentiis told a Wall Street Italia show.
In reply, Africa’s football-ruling body stated, “CAF is committed to the role that football plays in Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia and globally, bringing together and uniting people of different cultures, language groups, races, ethnic groups, and religious backgrounds.
The Napoli FC president went further to state that, the African players must sign an agreement indicating their refusal to participate in the AFCON, as a condition of employment.
The Confederation of African Football has demanded serious disciplinary actions to be taken against Napoli FC’s president for his irresponsible and unacceptable comment about African players, as this falls under Article 14 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations.
The likes of Taribo west, ex- Ac Milan player, kalidou khoulibaly who moved to Chelsea recently from Napoli, and a host of other African players have expressed displeasure regarding Aurelio de Laurentiis’s statement on African players.

The AFCON is the biggest competition in Africa and is held every two years. Its last edition in Cameroon was shown in more than 160 countries and attracted more than 600 million viewers.

Every footballer respects and honors his country, I feel African players who play for European teams should be given a right to represent their country when they are being called upon.

this is disrespectful to CAF and the entire African continent. European teams need to respect the African cup of nations, and also the African players who play for them.
