Fulham ties Liverpool down to a 2-2 draw

Newly promoted side Fulham tied Liverpool down to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage with Fulham going up in front twice in their first game of the season.

Marco Silva’s boys started out in a stronger fashion and maintained possession as they held Liverpool at bay in the opening stage of the match.

In the 13th minute, Liverpool moved a counterattack that led to a goal by Luis Diaz but the goal was chopped off as Andy Robertson was ruled offside in the build-up.

The game continued with neither side creating a real chance as Fulham continued to intercept Liverpool’s build-ups.

Thirty-two minutes into the game, Aleksandar Mitrovic leaped over Trent Arnold to head into the back of the net, a cross from Kenny Tete and put the Cottagers ahead in the game.

Liverpool pressed for an equalizer and Diaz saw his shot on goal saved by the woodwork five minutes after the opening goal by Fulham.

Second half resumed with no changes from both teams but Liverpool were forced into an early substitution as Thiago Alcantara developed a hamstring problem.

Thiago was replaced by Harvey Elliott while Roberto Firmino made way for new signing, Darwin Nunez to come on and mark his EPL debut in the 51st minute.

Fulham maintained their balance and missed the chance to extend the lead to 2-0 after a shot by Kebano struck the inside post and came out wide.

Liverpool’s new attacker, Darwin Nunez found the equalizer in the 64th minute with a wonderful back heel goal after receiving a low cross in the box from Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool’s momentum was cut short after a loosed ball from Joel Matip ended in the legs of Mitrovic who took on a one-on-one move against Van Dijk, winning a penalty as he tried to dazzle pass the defender.

Andy Madley pointed to the spot and Mitrovic converted the penalty to put Fulham up again in the 72nd minute.

A cross from Arnold in the 81st minute deflected off the head of a Fulham defender and fell straight to Nunez who flicked it to Salah.

The Egyptian made no mistake as he calmly put the ball in the back of net from close range to make it 2-2 with few minutes left to play.

Liverpool nearly got the match winning goal in the closing stage of the game as a well struck shot from outside the box by Jordan Henderson ricocheted off the crossbar.
