A former Inspector General of Police, IGP, Tafa Balogun has died after a brief illness in Lagos state.

The former IGP, born August 25,1947, in Ila Orangun, Osun State and aged 74, died few days to his 75th birthday.

Tafa Balogun was appointed IGP on March 6th, 2002 thus becoming the 21st IGP in Nigeria.

He also served at various capacities in other states such as Abia, Rivers and Kano where he was appointed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone one, Kano State shortly before his promotion to rank of IGP in March 2002.

Balogun who made headlines in 2005 over stealing and laundering of over $100million was arraigned and convicted over the 70charges pressed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC.
